Smart Lock Installation

Your mother still lives on her own, and the personal support worker, the pharmacy delivery and two siblings all need to get in on different days. Cutting keys for everyone feels wrong; a code for each person, with a log, feels right.

In plain words

A smart lock is only half installed when the screws are tight; the other half is the account behind it. During the visit the administrator account is created by you, on your own phone and email, so nobody else holds the keys to the settings. Factory codes are deleted, a code is made for each person who needs one, and the auto-lock timing, sounds and alerts are set to suit the household. If the lock joins Wi-Fi or a hub, that connection is made and tested. The locksmith walks you through adding and removing users so future changes are yours to make, and keeps no codes afterwards.

The call
The rental turns over every few months and each time you drive across town to swap keys, then wonder whether copies were made. A lock with codes you can set and erase from your phone would end that cycle.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

    Signal strength at the door

If the lock is to be reached from a phone away from home, the network at the door matters as much as the lock. The locksmith checks how strong the Wi-Fi is on the door itself, not in the hallway, because a metal door, a brick wall or a router at the far end of the house can leave the entrance in a dead spot. Where it is weak, the options are a bridge plugged in near the door, a hub-based model that uses its own radio, or a Bluetooth lock that works locally and skips the network entirely. Finding this out before the box is opened avoids a lock that drops offline every evening.

  2. Scene 2

Power up and teach the lock its door

Once the hardware is tight, the lock gets the batteries its maker specifies, all fresh and all the same type, since mixing old and new cells shortens the life of the set. Most models then run a short calibration in which the motor learns which way is locked, how far the bolt travels and where it meets resistance. The locksmith runs this exactly as that model's instructions direct, door open or closed depending on the maker, then cycles it several times from the keypad and the thumb-turn while listening for a motor that strains. If the lock has a door-position sensor or a magnet to fit on the frame, it is placed and confirmed at this stage.

  3. Scene 3

A cleaner handover at the next turnover

For a rental or a shared home, the real payoff arrives at the next change of occupant. Instead of collecting keys and wondering about copies, you delete the departing tenant's code, add one for the incoming tenant and confirm the change in the app. The small register the locksmith helped you start shows who still has access and which codes are due to expire. Any guest, cleaner or contractor codes that belong to the old arrangement go at the same time. The override key stays under your control and is handed over or rekeyed as the tenancy rules and your own preference require, so the door changes hands with nothing left behind.

What shapes the quoteAshburnham Lock Experts

Network setup
Joining the lock to Wi-Fi, adding a bridge because the signal at the door is weak, or pairing with an existing hub is setup time and sometimes an extra device, and appears in the quote as such.
Condition and fit of the door
A door that already closes true with standard holes is the simplest install. One that needs hinges shimmed, a strike pocket deepened or holes enlarged adds preparation time, and that work is quoted as its own line.
Travel and access to the property
Distance to the address and how easy the door is to reach, such as a condo with a locked lobby or a rural property at the end of a long drive, are part of any call-out.

Questions we hear most

Is a smart lock as secure as a regular deadbolt?

The part that resists force is the same: a steel bolt, a solid strike with long screws and a door that closes true. Smart deadbolts meet the same residential hardware standards as mechanical ones, and a reinforced strike goes in regardless of which you choose. Where a smart lock adds is on the human side: codes that can be revoked and a door that locks itself, plus, on a key-free model, no keys to copy or lose. Good habits, such as unique codes and updates, keep the electronic side tidy.

I am a landlord. Are smart locks a good fit for my rental?

They suit turnover well: a departing tenant's code is deleted and a new one created without cutting keys or wondering about copies. Two things to plan for. The tenant in place must always have a working way in, which usually means their own code plus a key to the override cylinder, and any lock change on an occupied unit is done with the tenant's knowledge. Set the administrator account up under the property, not a departing employee, so control stays with you.

Will a smart lock fit my existing door?

Most residential doors have the standard preparation these locks are designed around: a large hole for the lock body, a smaller one in the edge for the bolt, and a thickness between roughly 35 and 45 millimetres. The locksmith measures all three plus the backset before recommending a model. Thicker doors take an extension kit, thin or glass-panelled doors and older doors with a mortise pocket call for a particular model or some preparation, and all of that is sorted out before the box is opened.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 64 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 64% of homes in Peterborough were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Old brass keys wear thin, and a key that has bent for years finally lets go in a cold cylinder. In older housing stock this is a regular call, so the locksmith is ready to extract the piece, check the cylinder and cut a new key from the code.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Peterborough (2021 Census).Where housing types are mixed, the same lost-key call means different things. In a house, rekey every door on the property. In an apartment, rekey the suite door and check with management about the common entrance. The locksmith asks which it is first.
