Locksmith in Kawartha HeightsExit doors, closers,
and hardware that lasts

Commercial doors in Kawartha Heights take a beating: hundreds of openings a day, deliveries, weather, the odd kick. We fit lever sets, closers, push bars and deadlatches built for that traffic, adjust them so the door shuts and latches on its own, and come back to service them before they fail. Nearby, we also work in Edgewood Park, Murray Hill and Springville.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 64 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 64% of homes in Peterborough were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Older housing means older frames. Wood that has settled for years leaves strikes slightly out of line, so a bolt drags or needs a lift of the handle. A locksmith expects this and brings the shims, longer screws and strike plates to correct it.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Peterborough (2021 Census).Where houses and attached homes share an area, lockouts are as varied as the doors. A porch, a hallway or a shared vestibule each calls for a slightly different approach, and a locksmith used to all three arrives ready for whichever it is.

The shop's lever handle goes down as usual, but the latch inside the mortise case never pulls back. Staff are waiting on the sidewalk with their coffees, the door is locked, and the handle is simply moving air.

High Security Locks

ScaleNot to scale

Businesses with pharmacies, records, cash or controlled stock need doors that hold under attack and keys that cannot be duplicated on a whim. The high security page covers cylinders, strikes, key systems and safes for those rooms, and how they fit alongside an alarm.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

After the attempted break-in the police officer pointed at your door and said the strike plate was held by two short screws. Nobody got in, but you have looked at that door differently every evening since.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Three teenagers, a dog walker, a cleaner and one house key that keeps going missing. You are tired of cutting copies and would rather give each person a code you can switch off, with a proper deadbolt behind it.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

You bought a keypad deadbolt online and pulled the old one off, only to find the hole in the door is a different size and the bolt latch sits at a backset the new kit does not list. The door is now open and the box is on the counter.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The patio slider is sitting crooked on its track. Its latch is snapped, the frame is bowed where it was pried, and the panel no longer meets the jamb, so the house cannot be closed up for the night.

Questions we hear most

My key turns all the way round but the bolt stays put. What has broken?

The key and cylinder are doing their job; the bar behind the cylinder that drives the bolt, called the tailpiece or cam, has broken, slipped or twisted out of engagement. It is a small part. The locksmith retracts the bolt through the mechanism or removes the cylinder to reach it, then fits a tailpiece of the right length and profile. Your cylinder and keys are unchanged afterwards.

I am a landlord. Should I rekey between tenants?

Many landlords do, and it removes the question of whether every copy came back. The locksmith rekeys the unit's cylinders so the incoming tenant holds the only working keys, cuts the copies you want, and notes the count for your move-in record. Because provincial tenancy rules expect the tenant to be handed replacement keys whenever a landlord changes a lock, the visit ends with keys for both of you and a clear list of which doors were done.

How long does servicing a mortise lock take?

A single entry lock that needs cleaning, springs and a strike adjustment is generally done in one visit of an hour or two. Filing a bit key adds bench time, and a set of interior latches is longer simply because there are more of them. A case that needs a part fabricated, or a replacement case that has to be ordered to size, may mean a second visit; the locksmith says so at the assessment.

What should I have ready before the locksmith arrives?

It helps to know which gate or door is affected, roughly how old the lock or closer is, and what exactly is happening: dragging, slamming, refusing a key, or a buzzer that stopped releasing the door. If the entry is shared, a rough idea of how many households or units currently need a working key speeds up the visit considerably. For a building entry, having contact information for a property manager or condo board on hand is useful if a decision needs their sign-off.
