2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 64 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 64% of homes in Peterborough were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Where most homes were built decades ago, doors often still carry their original mortise locks and brass knobs. That hardware can usually be cleaned, re-sprung and kept in service, with a modern deadbolt added above it for strength without losing the look.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Peterborough (2021 Census).Mixed housing brings mixed hardware ages as well as types. A locksmith may rebuild a mortise lock on a semi-detached house and then set up a keypad on a townhouse door across the road, and treats each with the care its owner expects.

Handheld diagnostic unit with a screen and buttons lying on a dirty car floor mat, cabled to a port under the dash. — Jackson Heights
The call
You were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow. You have raked the whole bank with a flashlight.

Close view of a satin-nickel deadbolt thumbturn and edge faceplate on a painted timber door. — Deadbolt Installation, Jackson Heights
The call
You bought a keypad deadbolt online and pulled the old one off, only to find the hole in the door is a different size and the bolt latch sits at a backset the new kit does not list. The door is now open and the box is on the counter.

High Security Locks

Person in safety glasses holding a small metal lock cylinder beside a workbench with a red cloth and an open car door. — Jackson Heights
The call
You jiggle the key a little and the old deadbolt opens even when the cut does not look quite right. If your worn key can do that, you wonder what a stranger with the right tools could do.

Master Key System Design

Two rows of lock cylinders on a metal surface with keys and colored key tags in front. — Master Key System Design, Jackson Heights
The call
On the warehouse floor, a shift supervisor's key opens the loading dock, the tool crib and the manager's office, though only the dock is really part of the job. Nobody planned it that way; the key was simply copied from whichever one was…

ScaleNot to scale

Businesses with pharmacies, records, cash or controlled stock need doors that hold under attack and keys that cannot be duplicated on a whim. The high security page covers cylinders, strikes, key systems and safes for those rooms, and how they fit alongside an alarm.

    High Security Locks

After the attempted break-in the police officer pointed at your door and said the strike plate was held by two short screws. Nobody got in, but you have looked at that door differently every evening since.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Three teenagers, a dog walker, a cleaner and one house key that keeps going missing. You are tired of cutting copies and would rather give each person a code you can switch off, with a proper deadbolt behind it.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The patio slider is sitting crooked on its track. Its latch is snapped, the frame is bowed where it was pried, and the panel no longer meets the jamb, so the house cannot be closed up for the night.

Questions we hear most

Can a rekey be done in winter, and will the locks freeze afterwards?

Winter is a normal time for this work. Cylinders come off the door and are pinned in the van, out of the wind, and go back on with a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant that sheds moisture rather than holding it the way oil does. A cleaned, dry-lubricated cylinder is less likely to freeze than the gritty one it replaced. Keeping a storm door closed over the main lock helps through freeze-thaw weeks.

I just moved in. Should the new deadbolt be keyed to a new key?

It is a good moment for it. Nobody knows how many copies of a previous owner's key exist, so pinning the new bolt, and the rest of the exterior doors, to one fresh key retires all of them at once. Lock manufacturers list a move as one of the main reasons to rekey. You come away with a known number of keys, each tested in every door it is meant to open.

What is the difference between restricted and patented keys?

A restricted keyway is one the manufacturer supplies to a limited set of dealers, so blanks are harder to obtain but not legally protected. A patented key design is protected by a patent for a fixed term, and making or selling the blank without permission is unlawful during that time. Patented systems give the firmer control; restricted ones give a useful step up. The locksmith explains which your chosen line uses and when any patent expires.

Who should hold the top-level master key?

As few people as the business can genuinely operate with. Every additional holder is another way a full-access key can be lost, borrowed or copied without anyone deciding that should happen. A useful test during design is asking, for each proposed holder, whether they need to open every single door on the property or only a defined group; the second answer usually points to a sub-master instead.
