Is a double-cylinder deadbolt a good idea after a lockout?
A deadbolt keyed on both sides is sometimes suggested for doors with glass beside them, but on a main escape door it means finding a key to get out. A door people use to leave the home should open from the inside without a key or special knowledge, especially in an emergency. A single-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn, paired with a reinforced strike and a proper glass film if needed, keeps both security and a clear way out. Home Lockout Service
What is a restricted keyway and is it worth having for a business?
A restricted or patented keyway is one whose blanks are supplied only through the manufacturer's authorised channels, so duplication is controlled rather than available at an ordinary counter, though the exact authorisation step varies by program and is not always a signed letter. For a company with staff turnover, cleaners and contractors, it means the keys in circulation are far easier to track. It can be introduced during a rekey, on the exterior doors only or across the whole premises, and works alongside a key register. Business Lockout Service
What happens if the piece cannot be removed?
It is rare, and it is discussed before anything changes. A glued, jammed or corroded-in fragment can usually still be reached by taking the cylinder off the door and working the plug out from the back. If even that fails, the cylinder is drilled where plug meets housing, sacrificed and replaced on the spot with new keys cut, so the door locks normally by the time the locksmith leaves. Broken Key Extraction
What should I have ready when I call about a break-in?
Whether the police have been called and any occurrence number; whether everyone is safe and the property is empty of intruders; which opening was forced and whether it closes at all; whether the damage is to the lock, the frame, the door or the glass; whether keys, remotes or codes were taken; whether you own, rent or manage the property; and whether there is glass beside the door. Photos on your phone help the locksmith bring the right hardware. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks
I am a landlord. Should I rekey between tenants?
Many landlords do, and it removes the question of whether every copy came back. The locksmith rekeys the unit's cylinders so the incoming tenant holds the only working keys, cuts the copies you want, and notes the count for your move-in record. Because provincial tenancy rules expect the tenant to be handed replacement keys whenever a landlord changes a lock, the visit ends with keys for both of you and a clear list of which doors were done. Lock Rekeying
I just moved in. Should the new deadbolt be keyed to a new key?
It is a good moment for it. Nobody knows how many copies of a previous owner's key exist, so pinning the new bolt, and the rest of the exterior doors, to one fresh key retires all of them at once. Lock manufacturers list a move as one of the main reasons to rekey. You come away with a known number of keys, each tested in every door it is meant to open. Deadbolt Installation
Can a lever replace a knob on the same door?
Yes, and it is a common change for anyone who finds a knob hard to grip. Levers use the same bore and backset as knobs, so the swap is usually a direct fit. Levers are handed, so the locksmith checks which way the door swings and chooses or adjusts the lever accordingly. A keyed entry lever pairs well with a deadbolt above it, and interior passage and privacy levers complete the set. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
How long does servicing a mortise lock take?
A single entry lock that needs cleaning, springs and a strike adjustment is generally done in one visit of an hour or two. Filing a bit key adds bench time, and a set of interior latches is longer simply because there are more of them. A case that needs a part fabricated, or a replacement case that has to be ordered to size, may mean a second visit; the locksmith says so at the assessment. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

The combination works but the handle won't turn. Is that still a safe opening job?
Yes, though the cause is different. A stuck handle usually points to a jammed bolt, corroded linkage, or a tripped relocker rather than a lock failure, and the locksmith traces the mechanism from the handle back to find where it is caught. The combination lock itself is tested separately once the bolt work moves freely again, to confirm it was never actually at fault. Safe Opening & Combination Change
Can more than one person have their own code?
Yes, on an electronic keypad that supports multiple users, each person can be given a separate code rather than everyone sharing one, which also makes it simple to remove a single code later without resetting the whole lock. A mechanical dial lock, by contrast, has one combination for everyone who needs it, so a change in who has access there means changing that one combination. Safe Installation & Servicing
What is the difference between restricted and patented keys?
A restricted keyway is one the manufacturer supplies to a limited set of dealers, so blanks are harder to obtain but not legally protected. A patented key design is protected by a patent for a fixed term, and making or selling the blank without permission is unlawful during that time. Patented systems give the firmer control; restricted ones give a useful step up. The locksmith explains which your chosen line uses and when any patent expires. High Security Locks

Does stamping keys 'do not duplicate' stop people copying them?
Not reliably. The stamp is a request, and any key on a standard blank can be copied by anyone with the blank and a machine. What does work is controlling the blank itself through a restricted keyway, or controlling access to the lock through interchangeable cores and a tight register. Stamping still has a place: a serial code on each key, instead of the business name, lets you track it without telling a finder where it fits. Commercial Rekeying
Who should hold the top-level master key?
As few people as the business can genuinely operate with. Every additional holder is another way a full-access key can be lost, borrowed or copied without anyone deciding that should happen. A useful test during design is asking, for each proposed holder, whether they need to open every single door on the property or only a defined group; the second answer usually points to a sub-master instead. Master Key System Design
Will this work with our existing alarm or camera system?
In most cases, yes. An access control installation can be planned to share information with an existing alarm panel, so an arm-or-disarm event lines up with whoever unlocked the door, and with a camera system, so a recorded clip can be matched to a specific credential rather than only a timestamp. The exact integration depends on what the existing alarm and camera equipment support. Access Control Installation
What is the difference between a rim, mortise and vertical-rod device?
A rim device sits on the surface of the door and suits most single openings, including many tall and fire-rated doors on their own. A mortise device fits into a pocket cut in the door's edge and is chosen where a heavier case or a particular trim style is wanted. A vertical-rod device runs rods to the top, or top and bottom, of the frame, which suits an opening that specifically needs latching at more than one point rather than height by itself. Car Keys
I have lost my only key. Can a locksmith make a new one at the roadside?
For most cars, yes. After the car is opened, the door cylinder is decoded to read the cuts, or the key code is drawn from the vehicle records against your proof of ownership, and a blade is cut in the van. A transponder key or fob is then programmed through the diagnostic port so the engine will start. Some newer or high-security models need dealer-only parts; you are told that up front rather than after. Car Lockout Service
My copied key opens the doors but the engine cuts out. Why?
The blade was copied but the chip was not. A hardware-store duplicate cut onto a plain blank has the right teeth, so it turns the locks and the ignition, yet the immobilizer hears no answer and shuts the engine off after a moment. The remedy is a proper transponder key: a blank with the correct chip, cut to your blade and programmed to the car, or a chip cloned from a working original. Car Key Replacement
What if the fob's battery is already low?
A low battery in the original does not stop a spare from being made, since the chip and code stored inside still respond during programming even as the battery fades. It is worth mentioning the low battery when you call, though, since the new fob is a natural moment to have a fresh battery on hand for both keys and to note which type each one takes. Spare Car Key Duplication
What if my vehicle turns out to need dealer-only programming?
Some manufacturers restrict fob programming to a security-gated procedure that only a dealer system or an approved access pathway can complete. When a vehicle falls into that category, the visit identifies it early, explains what the vehicle specifically requires, and documents anything already confirmed, such as a compatible fob, so the eventual dealer visit is not starting the diagnosis over from nothing.
