A lock problem is rarely only a lock problem. It is a door that swells shut in a damp week, a key that snapped on a cold morning, a tenant who left without handing anything back. In Downers Corners we listen first, explain the options, and do tidy work you can see before we drive off. The same crew covers Assumption.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 64 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 64% of homes in Peterborough were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Basement and side entries on older homes were often fitted long after the house was built, with whatever lock was on hand. Bringing those doors up to the standard of the front entry, and onto the same key, is a common and satisfying job.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Peterborough (2021 Census).Where the housing is mixed, expectations about what can be changed differ. A homeowner in a house decides everything; a condo owner works within house rules on the outer face. The locksmith knows which conversation to have at which door.

Businesses with pharmacies, records, cash or controlled stock need doors that hold under attack and keys that cannot be duplicated on a whim. The high security page covers cylinders, strikes, key systems and safes for those rooms, and how they fit alongside an alarm.

    High Security Locks

After the attempted break-in the police officer pointed at your door and said the strike plate was held by two short screws. Nobody got in, but you have looked at that door differently every evening since.

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Three teenagers, a dog walker, a cleaner and one house key that keeps going missing. You are tired of cutting copies and would rather give each person a code you can switch off, with a proper deadbolt behind it.

Questions we hear most

Is a double-cylinder deadbolt a good idea after a lockout?

A deadbolt keyed on both sides is sometimes suggested for doors with glass beside them, but on a main escape door it means finding a key to get out. A door people use to leave the home should open from the inside without a key or special knowledge, especially in an emergency. A single-cylinder deadbolt with a thumb-turn, paired with a reinforced strike and a proper glass film if needed, keeps both security and a clear way out.

What should I have ready when I call about a break-in?

Whether the police have been called and any occurrence number; whether everyone is safe and the property is empty of intruders; which opening was forced and whether it closes at all; whether the damage is to the lock, the frame, the door or the glass; whether keys, remotes or codes were taken; whether you own, rent or manage the property; and whether there is glass beside the door. Photos on your phone help the locksmith bring the right hardware.

My key turns all the way round but the bolt stays put. What has broken?

The key and cylinder are doing their job; the bar behind the cylinder that drives the bolt, called the tailpiece or cam, has broken, slipped or twisted out of engagement. It is a small part. The locksmith retracts the bolt through the mechanism or removes the cylinder to reach it, then fits a tailpiece of the right length and profile. Your cylinder and keys are unchanged afterwards.

I just moved in. Should the new deadbolt be keyed to a new key?

It is a good moment for it. Nobody knows how many copies of a previous owner's key exist, so pinning the new bolt, and the rest of the exterior doors, to one fresh key retires all of them at once. Lock manufacturers list a move as one of the main reasons to rekey. You come away with a known number of keys, each tested in every door it is meant to open.
