Locks Keys Safes

Locksmith in Peterborough, OntarioDoors that
shut properly again.

Half the lock trouble we see is really a door problem: hinges that have sagged, a frame that moved with the seasons, a strike a few millimetres off. We fix the alignment along with the lock, so the repair holds through next winter too.

Who answers when you call

The right answer for a shop with six staff is different from the right answer for a family of four, and we try not to carry one into the other. Homes generally want fewer keys and simpler routines; businesses want control and a record. We ask about the building, the people and the habits before naming a product, and we are comfortable saying that what you have already is enough.

Shop rules

Local locksmiths who explain their work.

  1. Questions welcomed. Ask about the lock, the method, the parts or the reasoning. A good explanation is part of the service, not a favour.
  2. Nothing forced that could be finessed. We reach for picks and shims before drills, and we tell you if the lock has left us no gentle option.
  3. Swept, wiped and working. Metal filings, drywall dust and old screws all leave with us. The lock is tested from both sides and the key handed over.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Call us about stronger locks.

Home lockout service

Where to start

Security should feel like a settled question, not a nagging one. These services exist to get you there: doors that lock without a wrestle, keys that only the right people hold, and hardware chosen for how you actually use the building rather than a catalogue picture.

Change or Rekey Locks

Cold mornings, sticky keys and a deadbolt you have to lean on to throw are all signs the hardware is asking…

Small things.
Big difference.

The key you reach for. The door you come home to. Good locksmith work begins with understanding how you use them.

High Security Locks

ScaleNot to scale

Businesses with pharmacies, records, cash or controlled stock need doors that hold under attack and keys that cannot be duplicated on a whim. The high security page covers cylinders, strikes, key systems and safes for those rooms, and how they fit alongside an alarm.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

After the attempted break-in the police officer pointed at your door and said the strike plate was held by two short screws. Nobody got in, but you have looked at that door differently every evening since.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Three teenagers, a dog walker, a cleaner and one house key that keeps going missing. You are tired of cutting copies and would rather give each person a code you can switch off, with a proper deadbolt behind it.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

You bought a keypad deadbolt online and pulled the old one off, only to find the hole in the door is a different size and the bolt latch sits at a backset the new kit does not list. The door is now open and the box is on the counter.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The patio slider is sitting crooked on its track. Its latch is snapped, the frame is bowed where it was pried, and the panel no longer meets the jamb, so the house cannot be closed up for the night.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 64 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 64% of homes in Peterborough were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Layers of paint build up on older doors and frames, and a lock that seemed to fail is sometimes a latch glued shut by the last coat. Part of the visit in an older area is freeing hardware, cleaning the edges and checking the door swings true.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Peterborough (2021 Census).Where housing is mixed, the same street can hold a solid wood front door, a steel townhouse door and a metal-clad suite door. A locksmith fits each with hardware suited to its construction, so every neighbour ends up with a door that locks properly.

Questions we hear most

Can you open a door that has a push bar on the inside?

Yes. From outside, an exit device is operated through its trim, which may be a keyed lever, a pull with a cylinder or a bare rim cylinder. Depending on the trim fitted, picking or decoding that cylinder either retracts the latch directly or unlocks a lever, knob or thumbpiece that then has to be turned to let the latch go. The bar, rods and dogging feature stay as installed for the emergency way out, and the bar is pressed afterward to confirm it releases the latch with one push.

Our alarm is armed. What happens when you open the door?

The opening is planned around it. Before any work, the person with the alarm code is ready to disarm, and where a monitoring company is involved they can be told to expect an entry at that address. If the contact trips anyway, the authorised person speaks to the station with the account password. Nothing about the alarm is bypassed; the door is opened, the system is disarmed normally, and the event is logged like any other.

This is the third time this door has locked someone out. Is something wrong with the hardware?

It can be. A cylinder that is worn, a strike plate that has shifted, or a latch that no longer seats squarely will all produce repeat lockouts even though the key looks fine. The locksmith checks the alignment of the door and frame, tests how smoothly the latch throws, and looks at wear inside the cylinder before simply letting you back in. If the hardware is the cause, fixing that during the same visit is usually quicker than calling again next month.

What is the difference between restricted and patented keys?

A restricted keyway is one the manufacturer supplies to a limited set of dealers, so blanks are harder to obtain but not legally protected. A patented key design is protected by a patent for a fixed term, and making or selling the blank without permission is unlawful during that time. Patented systems give the firmer control; restricted ones give a useful step up. The locksmith explains which your chosen line uses and when any patent expires.
