Spare Car Key Duplication: what to note first

The blade on the everyday key has gone shiny and thin along one edge, and lately it needs a wiggle before the ignition catches.

The blade on the everyday key has gone shiny and thin along one edge, and lately it needs a wiggle before the ignition catches. Nobody wants to be holding a failing original with nothing waiting in reserve if it finally gives out.

Worth answering before the call

Has the vehicle had an aftermarket alarm or remote starter installed? What year, make and model is the vehicle? Does the key have buttons, a chip, or neither?

Is cloning the same as programming a new key?

They solve the same problem differently. Cloning copies the working key's existing code onto a new chip, which some vehicles' systems permit directly. Programming instead has the vehicle itself learn a brand-new code and accept it as an additional valid key, which is how most recent vehicles with rolling codes or added cryptography are handled, since their systems are built specifically to resist straightforward copying.

Can a spare be made if the vehicle has an aftermarket alarm or remote starter installed?

Generally yes, though it is worth mentioning any aftermarket system when you call, since a factory immobilizer that has been wired into a third-party alarm or remote starter sometimes behaves differently from the standard setup the locksmith expects. Knowing this in advance lets the visit account for it rather than discovering it partway through programming.
