Commercial Rekeying

The renovation is finished and the contractors have gone, along with the loaner keys they used for six weeks. Trades, delivery drivers and an inspector all came through, and the front door still answers to the key that was passed around the site.

In plain words

For most business doors, rekeying is the sensible middle path between doing nothing and buying new hardware. Commercial cylinders are built to be repinned many times, and a lever set, mortise lock or storefront cylinder in decent condition has years left in it. Rekeying keeps the finish, the door preparation and the handles you already have and changes only the small brass pins inside. Where a cylinder is worn, corroded by winter salt or too light for the room behind it, the locksmith says so and offers a replacement for that door alone; the rest are rekeyed to the new plan.

The call
The drawer behind the counter holds a tangle of keys with tape labels: front old, side, Dave. Some open things, some open nothing, and the hardware-store copies mean the true count drifted long ago past anything written down.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

Reading the keys that already exist

Before deciding anything new, it helps to understand the old. Gather every key the business can find, including the ones with faded tape labels, and the locksmith reads them against the cylinders on the walk. Some will turn out to be duplicates of each other, some will belong to hardware that was replaced years ago, and some may operate doors nobody expected them to. Hardware-store copies stand out by their blanks and by the way they wear. This reading shows how far the key count has drifted and whether an old master still exists, and it lets the new plan retire everything found in the drawer rather than only the keys anyone remembered.

  2. Scene 2

Cutting and marking the new keys

Keys are cut to the new combinations on a code machine rather than traced from another key, so every copy is exact and the tenth key fits as cleanly as the first. Each key is stamped with a short code that means something only on the keying chart; the business name, the address and the word for the door it opens stay off the metal, so a lost key gives nothing away. Keys are counted out by group, tagged, and listed against the names of the people who will carry them. Where the plan uses a restricted keyway, the blanks are drawn against the authorization letter, and that letter is filed with the chart for future orders.

  3. Scene 3

    Keys counted into named hands

Alongside the chart comes a key register: each key's stamped code, the person it was issued to, the date, and a line for the date it comes back. Filling it in as keys are handed out on the first morning takes ten minutes and pays off at every departure afterwards, because the question becomes 'return key A-07' rather than 'did she have a key?'. Spare keys are counted too and kept somewhere locked rather than in the drawer where the old tangle lived. When the register and the chart agree with the keys on the hook, the business knows exactly who can open it, which is the whole point of the exercise.

What shapes the quoteAshburnham Lock Experts

Documentation and register
A keying chart, a key register and stamped codes on every key are part of a proper commercial rekey, and the quote names the paperwork so it is never skipped.
After-hours or split visits
Work done after closing, before opening or split across two visits to suit trading hours costs the same amount as a single daytime block. The exact figure is confirmed on site once the number of cylinders and the keying plan are known.
Distance to the premises
Travel to the site is part of the call-out, and a unit in a downtown plaza and one at the end of a rural industrial road are different trips.

Questions we hear most

Does stamping keys 'do not duplicate' stop people copying them?

Not reliably. The stamp is a request, and any key on a standard blank can be copied by anyone with the blank and a machine. What does work is controlling the blank itself through a restricted keyway, or controlling access to the lock through interchangeable cores and a tight register. Stamping still has a place: a serial code on each key, instead of the business name, lets you track it without telling a finder where it fits.

What information should I have ready before the locksmith arrives?

A list of the doors and other locks you want included, a copy of the lease or the property manager's contact, every existing key you can find, and a rough idea of who needs to open what. Note which doors, if any, are interchangeable cores and where the control key is. Knowing your quiet hours and who opens up in the morning helps the locksmith plan the order of work and the key handover.

What is a keying chart and why does it matter afterwards?

A keying chart is a plain list of every opening, the key group that operates it, the code stamped on those keys and the number issued. Months later it lets you answer exactly which doors a missing key opened, and it lets a locksmith add a new door to the system without changing anything else. Keep it with the key register, somewhere locked, with a copy off site.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 64 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 64% of homes in Peterborough were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Period hardware on older homes deserves matching parts, not a mismatched modern set. A locksmith who works among such houses keeps finishes and styles that suit them, so a repaired or replaced lock still looks like it belongs to the door.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Peterborough (2021 Census).Neighbourhoods of houses beside townhouses and low-rise buildings have a range of door constructions: solid wood, steel, fibreglass and metal-clad. A locksmith who works in such an area is used to fitting hardware to all of them without new holes.
